Frontier Makes Diamond Cheaper as Status Stops Replacing Fees

Frontier Airlines dropped Elite Diamond to 75,000 points and, from Sept. 1, will pay as little as 1 mile per dollar on basic fares. The same package adds free upgrades that only open after you buy a bundle.

Denver pitched a faster path to Elite Diamond on Aug. 27. The quieter change is that status stops standing in for the fees the airline used to waive.

A 25,000-Point Shortcut to Diamond

The top tier had sat at 100,000 Elite Status Points. Cutting that bar by 25,000 points, Frontier said, lets members who hit 75,000 during 2026 hold Diamond through 2027. Silver, Gold, and Platinum stays at 10,000, 20,000, and 50,000 for 2026 earning.

The press release called the Diamond change effective immediately. The airline’s program page says the new Diamond bar takes effect Sept. 1, 2026. Either way, 2026 spending still counts toward 2027 Diamond at the lower number.

THE ROLLOUT DATES

1. June 24, 2026: Frontier and Barclays sign the seventh amendment to their credit-card deal, stretching it to June 30, 2037.
2. Aug. 27, 2026: Frontier announces the Frontier Miles overhaul from Denver, with James Fenner, vice president of revenue and loyalty, on the release.
3. Sept. 1, 2026: New mileage and elite-point rates apply to tickets bought on or after this date. Tickets bought by Aug. 31 keep today’s earn.
4. Jan. 1, 2027: New elite benefits apply to bookings from this date. Silver rises to 15,000 points and Gold to 25,000 for the 2027 qualifying year.

On paper the shortcut is real. Gary Leff, writing at View From the Wing, ran the spend math that shows why it is smaller than the headline. A Diamond member who requalifies only on bundled fares, with no cobranded card, used to need $5,000 of eligible spend at 20x toward 100,000 points. At 16x toward 75,000, that same path is about $4,688, a 6 percent trim, not 25 percent.

Buy basic fares instead, and the new Diamond run is about $6,818 at 11x. That is 36 percent more flying than the old $5,000 bundled path, even though the published bar fell.

Basic Fares Fall to 1 Mile Per Dollar

Today every fare type pays the same program rate: 10 miles and points per dollar for a regular member, up to 20x at Diamond. From Sept. 1 the airline splits earning by fare, and it publishes new miles and points earning rates that punish the seat Frontier actually sells.

A member with no cobranded card falls from 10x to 1x on a basic fare, a 90 percent cut. Silver falls from 12x to 3x. Diamond, the tier the airline is advertising, still loses 45 percent of its basic-fare earn, from 20x to 11x. Bundles soften the haircut. They do not reverse it for anyone who does not hold the card.

EARN RATES WITHOUT THE EXTRA CARD BONUS

Select cardmembers who pay with the Frontier Airlines World Mastercard get another 5x miles and 1 elite point per dollar on eligible Frontier purchases, the airline said, on top of those cardmember columns. That is how a Diamond cardholder on a bundle can reach 27x. It is also how a regular member on a basic fare can still sit at 1x if the booking is not on the card.

The Points Guy laid the extra 5x into its published tables and still found noncardholders down on every fare. Even a Diamond member without the card earns 16x on a bundle, below today’s 20x. The only published rates that beat the current program sit in the cardmember-plus-bundle column.

Silver’s 2027 bar rises 50 percent, from 10,000 to 15,000. At 1x on basic fares, a nonelite member needs $15,000 of eligible Frontier spend to get there. Today that member needs $1,000 at 10x. Buy bundles at 6x and the new Silver run is $2,500, still two and a half times the old ticket.

Platinum Loses Its Unlimited Companion Pass

Platinum stays at 50,000 points. The perk that made that number worth chasing does not stay with it. For 2027, Frontier will give Platinum two companion travel certificates instead of unlimited companion travel. Diamond keeps the unlimited version.

The current pass is blunt. Platinum and Diamond can add any Frontier Miles member to a booking for government taxes and fees, starting at $5.60 one way, with no cap on uses and no named companion. You pick a different person each time. You have to add them when you book on flyfrontier.com. Frontier’s own FAQ still says there is no limit for as long as you hold the status.

Moving unlimited travel to Diamond means the people who used Platinum as a household product now have to clear 75,000 points to keep flying a second person for tax. That is the same 50,000 they already earn, plus another 25,000, at slower rates unless they hold the card and buy bundles. Two certificates are a coupon. Unlimited was a second seat on every trip.

Barclays still advertises the card as a way to “unlock free companion travel at Elite Platinum Status.” That line describes the 2026 benefit. From January 2027, Platinum companion travel is two certificates, terms apply, and the unlimited pass sits one tier higher.

Buy a Bundle or Miss the Upgrade

Every 2027 tier gains a space-available upgrade to UpFront Plus or first class, starting at Silver. The catch lives in the same bullet: the upgrade is only for travelers who bought an Economy or Premium bundle. Basic fares, the product on the homepage, do not qualify.

Frontier’s new cabin is still taking shape. First class is the first two rows in a 2-2 layout, pre-reclined, with extra space and no lie-flat bed. Food and drink stay for sale. Starlink Wi-Fi is due on the first aircraft in early 2027. The loyalty rewrite is how the airline has decided who may walk into those rows for free, and the answer is not “elites who bought a seat.”

THE UPGRADE CLOCK IN 2027

• Elite Silver: Window opens 4 hours before departure, and only with an Economy or Premium bundle.
• Elite Gold: Window opens 8 hours before departure on the same bundle rule.
• Elite Platinum: Window opens 18 hours before departure, with premium-seat upgrades for everyone on the booking when you buy Economy.
• Elite Diamond: Window opens 24 hours before departure, still only if a bundle is on the ticket.

Those are self-select windows, subject to seats left. They are not an automatic move at booking. Leff noted that Gold today can still take a Preferred seat at booking and ask for UpFront Plus four hours out without buying a bundle. The 2027 list swaps that for a later, nicer seat that you have already paid a bundle to be eligible for.

Basic fares, as Frontier now diagrams them, include a personal item. A carry-on costs extra. A seat assignment costs extra. Change and cancel fees apply. Economy, Premium, and Business bundles include no change or cancel fees, and the airline says every bundle includes that waiver. The 2027 elite list does not put a change-fee waiver back on status itself. Miles can buy an Economy bundle from 2,000 miles, so the gate is not cash-only, but it is still a purchase.

Checked bags do get a little heavier. Platinum’s free bag and Diamond’s two free bags move from 40 to 50 pounds for each person on the booking. That is a real gain, and it applies to the whole reservation, not just the member.

Barclays Locked In the Earn Rate That Survives

Fenner’s line in the release names the product the tables are built around.

With new earning opportunities, enhanced elite benefits, and a faster path to Elite Diamond, there has never been a better time to be a member of Frontier Miles and to have a Frontier Airlines World Mastercard.

The card, issued by Barclays, carries a $99 annual fee and 60,000-mile bonus after $1,000 of spend and payment of that fee inside 90 days. Cardholders get 5x miles on eligible Frontier purchases, 3x at restaurants, and 1x on everything else, plus two free checked bags. A first purchase can unlock Elite Gold; spend $3,000 in those 90 days and Gold lasts 12 months from account opening.

That last mechanic is how a lot of Platinum and Diamond accounts get built, because the card also pays 1 Elite Status Point per $1 on everyday spend. After Sept. 1, the same plastic is what keeps flight earning from collapsing. A Diamond cardmember on a bundle is at 22x before the extra 5x for paying with the card. A Diamond member on a basic fare, no card, is at 11x.

Frontier already told investors this relationship is the business. On June 24 it extended the co-brand pact to 2037, according to an 8-K filed June 30, and raised its pre-purchased miles facility with Barclays from $200 million to $375 million. In second-quarter 2026 remarks, the airline said Barclays card revenue rose nearly 30 percent from a year earlier, with record card sign-ups and double-digit growth in cardholder spend.

In September 2025, Chief Commercial Officer Bobby Schroeter told Reuters the airline wanted loyalty revenue at $6 per passenger by the end of 2026 and $10 by the end of 2028, against $30 to $40 at the big network carriers. Awarding fewer miles on the cheap seat, and hanging the new first-class upgrade on a bundle, is how a ULCC tries to climb that chart without giving the cabin away.

What Elite Status Buys After Jan. 1

Frontier says it will add Milestone Rewards at each tier for 2027, extra perks members can pick on top of the published list. It has not said what those perks are. Until that menu appears, the 2027 stack is the list below, each tier including the one under it.

2027 ELITE STACK FRONTIER PUBLISHED

Silver also gets Group 4 boarding, priority customer care, and family pooling. Gold adds Group 1 boarding. Platinum adds a waived pet-in-cabin fee and carry-ons for everyone on the booking. Diamond adds preboarding. The published 2027 list does not mention Discount Den discounts or the annual gifted-status passes that current Platinum and Diamond materials still describe.

GoWild pass holders are an open seam. Elite benefits today attach to GoWild travel, but the new upgrade rule is written for people who hold an Economy or Premium bundle. Frontier has not said how those two products meet.

If you already carry the Mastercard and you buy Economy or Premium on every trip, Diamond is cheaper to stamp and the bundle earn ticks up. If you built a year of cheap basic fares around Platinum’s second seat, the program that shows up in 2027 is a different product, and the 25,000 points Frontier took off Diamond are how it wants you to climb into it.
