We take copyright seriously, in both directions

BROAD BROWSE relies on its own work being protected, so we are not going to be casual about anyone else’s. If you own a copyright and believe something on this site uses it without permission, this page tells you exactly what to send and what happens next. If we have made a mistake, we would rather fix it quickly than argue about it slowly.

This policy follows the notice and takedown approach set out in the United States Digital Millennium Copyright Act, because it is the framework most widely recognised online. If you are outside the United States, the same process works: send us the same information and we will act on it under the law that applies.

Before you send a notice

Two quick checks save everyone time. First, make sure the material is actually yours and that we are actually hosting it, rather than linking to it or quoting it. We link out constantly, and we are not the right party for something published on a site we merely pointed to. Second, consider whether the use might be fair. Reporting the news involves quoting, describing and sometimes showing the thing being reported on, and a short, credited quotation used to inform readers is often lawful. If you are unsure, tell us your concern in plain language and we will look at it either way.

What a takedown notice must contain

To act on a complaint, we need enough to identify the work, find the material, and reach you. Please include all of the following.

Identification of the copyrighted work you say has been infringed, or a representative list if there are several.
The exact location of the material on our site: the full link to the page, and enough detail to find the specific image, passage or file on it.
Your name, postal address and an email address we can reply to.
A statement that you have a good faith belief the use is not authorised by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
A statement, made under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorised to act for the owner.
Your physical or electronic signature.

Send it to support@broadbrowse.com with COPYRIGHT at the front of the subject line. A notice missing the pieces above may be incomplete under the law, and we may come back to you for what is missing rather than act on a partial complaint.

What we do when a valid notice arrives

We review complaints promptly. Where a notice is valid and the use is not clearly lawful, we remove or disable access to the material and let the person who posted it know why, if it was not us. We keep a record of what we removed and why, because a takedown log is an accountability record and pruning it defeats the point of keeping one.

If we conclude the use is lawful, for example a properly credited quotation in a news report, we may keep it up and explain our reasoning to you rather than remove journalism on request. Copyright is not a lever for making unflattering but accurate coverage disappear, and complaints that are really about the reporting rather than the rights are handled as a matter of accuracy under our corrections policy.

If you think your material was removed wrongly

If your material was taken down and you believe that was a mistake or that the use was authorised or lawful, you can send a counter notice. It should identify the material and where it was, include your name, address and a statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good faith belief it was removed by mistake or misidentification, and include your signature and your consent to the jurisdiction of an appropriate court. Send it to the same address with COPYRIGHT COUNTER NOTICE in the subject, and we will consider it and act accordingly.

Repeat infringers, and using our work

Where our comment sections or submission tools allow people to post material, we will, in appropriate cases, restrict or bar anyone who repeatedly infringes the rights of others. Warnings are not infinite.

On the other side of the ledger, our own articles, images and layout are protected too. You may quote a reasonable extract with credit and a link back, which is normal and welcome, but wholesale copying or republication is not permitted, as our terms of service spell out. If you want to license or syndicate our work, write to the same inbox and ask.
