Terms of Service

The short version

These are the rules for using BROAD BROWSE. By reading the site you accept them. We have kept them as short as a document like this can decently be, and where a clause has real consequences for you we have said so in plain words rather than hoping you skim past it.

Two documents sit alongside this one and govern their own territory. What we do with data about your visit is in our privacy policy, and what we collect in your browser is in our cookie policy. Where those documents and this one seem to disagree about data, they win on data and this page defers to them.

Using the site

You may read, link to, and share our work for your own personal, non commercial use. You may quote a reasonable extract with credit and a link back to the original story. That is normal and welcome, and it is how news is supposed to travel.

What you may not do is take the site apart or take it down. That means no scraping or bulk copying of our articles to republish elsewhere, no framing the site so our work appears as someone else’s, no stripping our credits, and nothing that attacks or overloads the service, probes it for weaknesses, or tries to get at parts of it not meant for the public. Automated access that ignores our machine readable rules or hammers the servers is not permitted, and using our content to train a commercial model without agreement is not a personal use.

What the site is worth relying on

We report carefully, but news is a moving target, and a page that was accurate when it published can be overtaken within the hour. We publish for general information, and nothing here is professional advice of any kind. The limits of what you should lean on this site for are set out in our disclaimer, and it is worth reading before you act on anything time sensitive.

We do not promise the site will always be available, complete, or free of error. We correct what we get wrong under our corrections policy, which is a real commitment, but it is not a guarantee that every page is perfect at the moment you happen to load it.

Comments and anything you send us

Where we open comments or invite messages, you are responsible for what you submit. Keep it lawful and keep it civil. Do not post other people’s private information, do not defame anyone, do not upload anything you have no right to share, and do not use our threads for spam or advertising. We can remove anything that breaks these rules, and we can close comments on a story or across the site without notice.

When you send us a tip, a letter or a comment, you keep ownership of it, but you give us permission to publish and edit it in connection with our reporting, unless you have clearly marked it confidential or asked otherwise. If you send us something confidential, we treat it as such, and how that works is on our contact page.

Our content and our name

The articles, images, layout and the BROAD BROWSE name are owned by us or used with permission, and copyright and trademark law protects them. If you believe something on the site infringes your rights, our process for handling that is in our DMCA and copyright policy, which tells you exactly what to send and where.

Links out to other sites are there for your convenience. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for what they publish, what they collect, or whether their links still work. A link is not an endorsement.

Liability, in plain terms

You use the site at your own risk, and to the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses that follow from using it or from being unable to use it, including anything you decided or did based on something you read here. Nothing in these terms limits a liability that the law does not allow us to limit. Some places give consumers rights that a document like this cannot sign away, and where that is so, those rights stand and this clause yields to them.

Changes, ending, and the law that applies

We can update these terms as the site changes. When we do, the date below moves, and continuing to use the site after that means you accept the new version. We can also suspend or withdraw the site, or restrict access, where we reasonably need to.

These terms are governed by the law of the place where our publisher is established, and disputes go to the courts there, without prejudice to any mandatory protections that apply where you live.
