Why advertise on BROAD BROWSE

BROAD BROWSE is a free, independent general news site read by people who come for world and breaking news across business, politics, health, science, technology, sports and entertainment. That is a broad, engaged general audience, and advertising is what keeps the reporting free to read. If you want to reach readers who are paying attention, this page explains how to do it here and, just as importantly, what we will and will not run.

We would rather set the rules out plainly at the start than discover a disagreement halfway through a campaign. Nothing on this page is a trick or a hidden condition. It is simply how we sell space without letting the selling touch the journalism.

What we offer

Most of our inventory is standard display advertising, filled programmatically through the major exchanges and also available through direct deals for advertisers who want a specific placement or a guaranteed share of our pages. Alongside that we offer newsletter sponsorship and, occasionally, clearly labelled sponsored content.

  • Programmatic display. The bulk of our inventory, bought through exchanges, with the usual controls over viewability, frequency and brand safety.
  • Direct display. Specific placements or campaigns arranged with us directly, useful when you want more certainty than an auction gives.
  • Newsletter sponsorship. A labelled placement in editions that go to readers who chose to subscribe.
  • Sponsored content. Material you supply or we produce to your brief, always labelled as sponsored so no reader can mistake it for our journalism.

To discuss any of these, write to support@broadbrowse.com with ADVERTISING at the front of the subject line, and tell us roughly what you want to achieve, your budget range and your timing.

The one rule that governs everything

Buying advertising buys you space and attention. It does not buy influence over our journalism, and that is not a detail we will bend on for a big enough cheque. Advertisers do not see stories before they run, cannot review or soften them, and cannot have them pulled. When a company that advertises with us becomes the subject of coverage, the story says so, and the coverage is decided by the newsroom exactly as it would be for anyone else.

This wall is the whole basis of the arrangement. A reader trusts our reporting because it is not for sale, and that trust is precisely what makes advertising here worth buying. Undermining it to please one advertiser would devalue the space for every other. The fuller account of how the money is kept away from the desk is on our ownership and funding page, and the newsroom side is in our editorial standards.

Sponsored content is always labelled

We will run sponsored content, and we will never disguise it. Anything paid for by an advertiser is clearly marked as sponsored or as an advertisement, in a way a reader cannot miss, and it does not carry the byline or the authority of our newsroom. We will not publish material designed to be mistaken for our own reporting, whatever it is worth, because that is the one thing that would harm both our readers and our honest advertisers at once.

What we will not run

Some categories are declined regardless of price. The list below is not exhaustive, and we keep final say over any advertisement on our pages.

  • Anything unlawful, or promoting it.
  • Scams, deceptive offers, fake billing notices, and get rich quick schemes.
  • Malware, deceptive download buttons, and advertisements that impersonate a system alert or our own site.
  • Political advertising that hides who is paying for it.
  • Advertising aimed at children, and anything with no business sitting next to news.
  • Content that is hateful, that harasses, or that demeans people for who they are.
  • Miracle health cures and treatments that promise what they cannot deliver.
  • Creative that is knowingly false or that we judge is designed to mislead our readers.

Turning down revenue is part of running a publication readers can trust, and we accept that cost.

Data, and what readers are told

Advertising on the modern web involves data about the people who see it, and we are open with readers about that. What our advertising partners collect, how personalised advertising works, and how a reader can refuse it is set out in our privacy policy and our cookie policy. Readers who decline personalised advertising still see advertising, chosen by the context of the page rather than a profile, and campaigns should expect that some of our audience will be reached that way.

Getting in touch

Write to support@broadbrowse.com with ADVERTISING in the subject line, and a person on the business side will reply, kept deliberately separate from the desk that would cover you. Tell us what you are trying to reach and we will tell you honestly whether we can help, including when the honest answer is that we are not the right fit. The other ways to reach us are on our contact page.
