Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models may come with a new storage option of 2TB, doubling the current maximum capacity of 1TB, according to a rumor from China.
A New Storage Tier for the Pro Models
The rumor, which was posted on the Korean Naver blog by an account named “yeux1122”, claims that a supplier source has confirmed that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will be available with 2TB of storage in 2023. The same claim was also made by a Weibo account over the weekend, which added that the Pro models are likely to start with a minimum of 256GB storage instead of the current base 128GB capacity on iPhone 14 models.
If true, this would mean that Apple would offer four storage tiers for the iPhone 15 Pro models: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. Such a storage bump could also justify the rumored price hike for the Pro models this year. Both Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman and tech analyst Jeff Pu have said that they expect the iPhone 15 Pro models to be more expensive than the iPhone 14 Pro models. Pu believes that the iPhone 15 Pro could start at $1,099, up from the $999 starting price of the iPhone 14 Pro.
Why More Storage Could Be Useful for Some Users
One of the reasons why Apple could increase the storage capacity of the iPhone 15 Pro models is to accommodate the new camera features that were introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro models, such as ProRes video. ProRes video is a high-quality video format that consumes significantly more storage than regular videos. For example, to record ProRes video in 4K at 30 frames per second, an iPhone 14 Pro model with a 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage capacity is required. ProRes video recording is limited to 1080p at 30 frames per second on iPhone 14 Pro models with a 128GB storage capacity.
For users who are into videography and creative work, having more storage space could be very useful when filming large amounts of 4K footage. The extra terabyte could also be handy for storing other types of media, such as photos, music, podcasts, and games. Of course, not everyone will need that much storage on their phones, especially if they use cloud services or external drives to back up their data. However, for those who want to have everything on their devices without worrying about running out of space, the 2TB option could be appealing.
When Will We Know for Sure?
The rumor about the 2TB storage option should be taken with a grain of salt, as it is not based on any official confirmation from Apple or reliable sources. In fact, last year’s iPhone 14 Pro models were also rumored to come with a 2TB option, but that did not happen. Therefore, it is possible that the rumor is inaccurate or based on outdated information.
We will know for sure what Apple has in store for the iPhone 15 Pro models in just over a month. Apple’s annual iPhone event is expected to take place on either Tuesday, September 12, or Wednesday, September 13, according to Gurman. At the event, Apple will likely unveil the new features and specifications of the iPhone 15 lineup, as well as other products such as the Apple Watch Series 7 and the AirPods 3.
