Escape From Playtime Sets October 21 as Mob’s Second Co-Op
Escape from Playtime hits Steam Early Access on October 21, Mob’s second co-op in the toy factory after Project Playtime’s shutdown.
Mob Entertainment will open Steam Early Access for Escape from Playtime on October 21, a 1-4 player co-op horror game set inside the Playtime Co. factory. The studio named the day at the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct on September 20, ten days before Halloween. It is also the second multiplayer game Mob has planted in that plant, arriving 86 days after the first one was told to shut down.
Escape From Playtime Hits Steam on October 21
The listing is already live, still without a price, and it locks Steam Early Access on October 21 as a work in progress. Mob posted the same day that an open beta is coming soon, with no calendar attached to that beta. Players can wishlist the game now, and the studio is already pointing people at playtests.
Escape from Playtime first appeared at the Future Games Show during Gamescom on August 26, billed only as coming soon. Twenty-five days later, Tokyo Direct supplied the day. On its own channel, Mob framed the pitch in one joke: ever dreamed of being a tiny plush loose in a factory full of toys that want to eat you?

The date sits close enough to October 31 to sell a Halloween night with friends. The harder clock is the one that started on July 27, when the same studio told its last co-op crowd the experiment was over.
A Voice Sends Tiny Toys Into Shifting Halls
You do not walk back in as a missing employee. You play as the Smiling Critters, the dead-eyed toy line from Poppy Playtime: Chapter 3, and you do it solo or with up to three friends. A hidden Voice sends each run into a slice of the factory that changes as you go, then asks you to haul parts back for a home promised to toys that prove they are useful.
Tyler, a Mob developer pinning an FAQ on Steam, put the loop in plainer terms: you extract building materials at the behest of that Voice, which promises sanctuary. The Steam page adds the catch that makes streamer horror awkward. Proximity voice chat is on, so a loud callout can bring the factory’s rejects down on the squad.
HOW A RUN IS SUPPOSED TO WORK
- Drop in small: Each attempt puts the team in classrooms, warehouses, testing labs, and the dark corridors that join them, with the layout shifting from run to run.
- Take orders: The Voice wants scattered parts and resources carried back, supposedly to build a home for loyal toys.
- Keep the mic down: Talk is required, and an irresponsible whisper can end the job, because enemies hunt by sound as well as sight.
- Leave with the haul: Search, hide, distract, and retreat before the rejected Playtime Co. creations close the route.
Brandon James, game director at Mob, tied the design to a factory that still has rooms nobody has seen, and to a studio that wants another multiplayer foothold in that space.
We’ve always loved the idea that Playtime Co. is this huge, awful place with more hiding inside of it than anyone has seen. Paired with our passion for exploring and building multiplayer experiences in this world, where Escape From Playtime started, and working together with our community, we’re creating a game that will continue to deliver excitement and surprises. And of course a good jump scare or two.
Brandon James, Game Director, Mob Entertainment announcement
The September 20 trailer lets the Voice speak for itself. Gather what the powers command, deliver it, prove yourselves useful and you will be rewarded. Fail, and you will be replaced. Promotional clips already show Miss Delight among the things that catch you if you do not.
Project Playtime Servers Close Later This Year
Mob has already run a co-op game in this universe. Project: Playtime went live in December 2022 as a free multiplayer spinoff, and Steam Charts still lists an all-time peak of 16,513 players. The last Phase 3 hot patch landed on October 26, 2023. After that, the factory went quiet while the studio poured time into the story chapters.
On July 27, 2026, Mob posted that it had decided to end operations for Project: Playtime, with server closure later this year. The note thanked people who kept showing up for a title the studio had stopped feeding. It also left a door cracked.
While this era is coming to a close, the truth is that Project: Playtime was only the beginning. We’re cooking up something pretty special that we’ll be able to share with you soon, so stay tuned, but our Project: Playtime community, we think you’ll be pretty delighted.
The Mob Entertainment Team, Steam news, July 27, 2026
Thirty days later, Escape from Playtime closed the Future Games Show. The studio never called the new game a patch for the old one, and it did not have to. A second co-op in the same halls, sold as a Smiling Critters adventure, is what arrived in public after that promise.
THE TWO MULTIPLAYER CLOCKS
- December 2022: Project: Playtime is on Steam, and the first full month posts the 16,513-player peak.
- October 26, 2023: Phase 3 gets a hot patch. Public development then stalls for years.
- February 18, 2026: Poppy Playtime: Chapter 5, Broken Things, launches on Steam and Epic.
- July 27, 2026: Mob ends operations on Project: Playtime and teases something special.
- August 26, 2026: Escape from Playtime is revealed at Gamescom as a 1-4 player Early Access co-op.
- September 20, 2026: Tokyo Direct sets October 21 and flags an open beta as soon.
- October 21, 2026: Early Access is scheduled to unlock on Steam.
On Steam, the first replies under Mob’s own FAQ already ask the ugly question: does this meet the same fate if the studio walks away again? The worry is not theoretical. People remember a free game that lost updates, then lost its future.
Eight Critters Walk in With One Starter Zone
Early Access is the product, not a demo with a later surprise. Mob says it is targeting about a year in that state, with the clock based on when the core feels established with the people playing it. The studio also says the price will go up at the 1.0 release, once a lot more content is in. That is the only pricing fact on the page. There is no dollar figure yet, and no claim that the game will be free.
Launch content is narrow on purpose. The initial build is planned around the full eight-character Smiling Critter roster, one starter zone, and a core enemy lineup. Later updates are supposed to add zones, Critters, features, and fixes shaped by player notes on Discord, plus an in-game bug tool.
WHAT EARLY ACCESS IS SELLING
| Piece | On October 21 | Toward 1.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Playable toys | All eight Smiling Critters | More Critters over time |
| Factory | One starter zone, layouts that change each run | New zones on the roadmap |
| Threats | A core enemy lineup | New enemies and features from feedback |
| Players | Solo or 1-3 friends, proximity voice chat | Same loop, more places to use it |
| Money and time | Price unlisted; about a year of Early Access | Price rises once 1.0 ships |
| Hardware | Windows 10/11, 8 GB RAM, GTX 1650 or RX 470 class card | More hardware support listed as a 1.0 goal |
The eight toys in that roster, as listed in launch materials, are CatNap, DogDay, Bobby BearHug, Hoppy Hopscotch, Bubba Bubbaphant, Kickin’ Chicken, Crafty Corn, and PickyPiggy. English has full audio; Steam lists 10 languages for the interface. Controller support is partial. Steam Deck compatibility is still unknown. Consoles are not part of this launch.
Mini Mode Puts the Factory at Critter Height
The main Poppy Playtime games send a person through set pieces and then stop until the next chapter. This spinoff is built to be replayed. The Voice appears to alter the factory so the same job does not use the same hallway twice, which is how a four-player night survives after the jump scares are known.
Mini Mode is the other change that the chapters never offered. You crawl, jump, and climb through iconic rooms at toy scale, which turns vents and under-table gaps into routes. More Critters cover more ground, and they also create more ways for someone to blow the quiet. That is the design Mob is betting people will repeat.
James’s line about multiplayer is doing extra work here. Project: Playtime already proved that friends will pile into Playtime Co. if you let them. It also proved that a young studio can lose that room when chapter work takes the oxygen. Escape from Playtime is the retry, with extraction in place of the older mode and with the merch line as the player models.
Mob still describes the new game as canon-adjacent in the only way that matters to lore hunters: finished runs are meant to reveal a deeper tie to the larger story, while the Voice’s motives stay unclear. You are building something. The page will not say what.
Huggy Wuggy Already Lives on Store Shelves
The chapters made the money and the myth. Consumer products are what keep the faces in bedrooms when a new episode is months away. Brothers Zach and Seth Belanger founded the company in 2015, shipped Poppy Playtime in 2021, and now sell a multi-million-unit mascot-horror series. Chapter 5 is the latest proof that the audience still shows up for a dated drop.
THE FRANCHISE AROUND THE SPINOFF
- Chapter 5: Broken Things launched on February 18, 2026. Mob said it hit No. 1 on Steam’s Global Top Sellers list and held that spot for more than 24 hours, and also claimed the No. 1 most-watched game on Twitch that day.
- Toys: In May 2025 the studio announced a three-year global licensing deal with McFarlane Toys for figures, plush, dioramas, and prop replicas.
- Film: Legendary Pictures took a Poppy Playtime movie deal in 2024. Public detail on that film is still thin.
Playing as the Smiling Critters is a merch idea with a spawn point. Those toys already travel as plushes and blind-bag figures. Putting them in a four-player Steam game asks the same kids, and the same streamers, to inhabit the product instead of watching someone else get chased by it.
That is why the proximity mic is a real design fight, not flavor text. The series grew on loud reactions. The new rules punish the yell that made Huggy Wuggy a clip. If the loop works, it will be because squads learn to whisper. If it fails, it will look like another Poppy extra that could not hold a server.
The Bet Is Whether Mob Stays This Time
October 21 is a short Early Access boot, not a finished toy factory. The known terms are clear enough to list, and the blanks are the ones that sank the last co-op.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The day: Steam Early Access is set for October 21, 2026, after the September 20 Tokyo Direct reveal.
- The loop: 1-4 players, eight Critters, one starter zone, changing layouts, proximity voice chat, a Voice that wants parts.
- The clock: Mob is aiming at about a year of Early Access and plans to raise the price at 1.0.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The price: No number, no free-to-play promise, no edition structure on the store page.
- The beta: Open beta is described as soon, with no date beside October 21.
- The stay: Consoles, Steam Deck, and a 1.0 day are still unlisted, and so is any hard promise that support will outlast the Halloween traffic.
People waiting on the old game already treated the July note as a handoff. The new page asks them to sign up for upcoming playtests while those servers wind down. Wishlisting is open. The factory will let a fresh crowd in on October 21, and this time the toys are the ones who have to keep quiet to get out.
