GTA 6 Gets an M Rating and a Purchases Tag
GTA 6 is rated M, PEGI 18 and R18+, with sex scenes in Australia and an In-Game Purchases tag Rockstar has not squared with its no-monetization pledge.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is rated M for Mature on U.S. store pages, with PEGI 18 in Britain and R18+ in Australia.
PlayStation and Xbox listings that went live on October 1, 2026 also carry an In-Game Purchases notice. That stamp now sits on the same product Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson described, in a late August preview, as having “no monetizations in this game.”
The Rating Boards Finally Filled In the Store Pages
The U.S. PlayStation Store and Xbox Store both show Mature 17+ for Grand Theft Auto VI. The seven content warnings are Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. The interactive element on those pages is In-Game Purchases, not the separate loot-box wording the ESRB uses when items are randomized.
Britain’s PEGI 18 label names Drugs, Sexual Content, Extreme Violence, Nudity, and In-Game Purchases. Australia’s R18+ line is shorter and blunter: Drug Use, High Impact Violence, Sex Scenes. New Zealand’s R18 listing adds Graphic Violence, Nudity, and Offensive Language beside Sex Scenes. The ESRB has still not posted the longer rating summary that usually describes specific scenes and systems.
GTA 6 AGE RATINGS ON STORE PAGES
| Region | Board and label | Content warnings |
|---|---|---|
| United States | ESRB Mature 17+ | Blood and Gore; Intense Violence; Mature Humor; Nudity; Strong Language; Strong Sexual Content; Use of Drugs and Alcohol; In-Game Purchases |
| United Kingdom | PEGI 18 | Drugs; Sexual Content; Extreme Violence; Nudity; In-Game Purchases |
| Australia | R18+ | Drug Use; High Impact Violence; Sex Scenes |
| New Zealand | R18 | Drug Use; Graphic Violence; Nudity; Offensive Language; Sex Scenes |
Take-Two’s June pre-order note still pointed buyers to the official Grand Theft Auto VI product page and said the game was not yet rated. The storefronts have now done the job the publisher left blank.
Australia Wrote Sex Scenes Into the Store Copy
The phrase drawing the most noise is not on the U.S. rating at all. Australia and New Zealand are the listings that say “Sex Scenes” in plain words. The ESRB’s matching idea is Strong Sexual Content, a broader tag that already covers scripted sex, nudity, and sexual talk.
Trailers have already shown intimate scenes between the two leads, Jason and Lucia. GTA 5’s short Australian store line used the single word “Sex,” even though that game included at least one scripted scene of that kind. The new wording is sharper. It is not, by itself, proof that GTA 6 built a larger sex system, a minigame, or a Hot Coffee-style toy in the files.
That distinction is getting lost. Graphics passed around with the U.S. M rating have copied “Sex Scenes” into the ESRB list, which does not use those words. Other posts treat the Australian line as evidence the new game is more explicit than GTA 5. A store warning names a category. It does not publish a scene list, a camera angle, or a playable mechanic.
Parents who actually need a decision already have the adult envelope: drugs, strong sexual content, nudity, and high-end violence. Anyone hunting for a restored sex minigame is reading a ratings board’s local vocabulary as a design document.
In-Game Purchases, Upgrades and a GTA+ Month
The quieter line on the U.S. and U.K. pages is the one that collides with Rockstar’s own summer talk. Nelson’s answer to preview host Andy Cortez was short. Players would not spend real money inside the game.
The ESRB does not treat “In-Game Purchases” as a synonym for Shark Cards. When the board put the label on boxed games in 2018, it said the tag applies to offers paid with real-world currency, including upgrades, subscriptions and season passes, plus bonus levels, skins, and virtual coins. In 2020 it split off a second tag, In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items), for loot boxes and other chance buys. GTA 6’s listing uses the first tag, not the second.
With the new In-Game Purchases interactive element coming to physical games, parents will know when a game contains offers for players to purchase additional content.

Two paid extras already sit on this SKU. Digital pre-orders include a free month of GTA+, Take-Two’s subscription for GTA Online and the GTA+ Games Library, redeemed in Grand Theft Auto V. The store also sells a jump from the standard game to the Ultimate Edition. Either one can justify the label under the ESRB’s own examples. Rockstar has not said which one it is, or whether more paid extras will appear after launch.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The label: Store pages show In-Game Purchases, not In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items).
- The pledge: Nelson told Cortez there are “no monetizations in this game,” speaking about the single-player launch.
- The extras already sold: a $20 Ultimate Edition upgrade and a GTA+ month bundled with digital pre-orders.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Shark Cards: Nothing on the rating says GTA 6 ships with real-money cash packs in the story mode.
- Online at launch: Take-Two described a single-player experience, and Rockstar has not announced a new GTA Online to land on day one.
- Scene detail: The ESRB’s long summary, which usually names specific acts and systems, is still unpublished.
The original In-Game Purchases notice, the ESRB said, still covers DLC, expansions and cosmetic items when those extras are sold without a random roll. That is the bucket the Ultimate Edition fits. It is also a wider bucket than the sentence Nelson gave Cortez.
What the $99.99 Ultimate Edition Adds
The paid jump is not a mystery SKU hiding in a leak. Take-Two priced it in the same June 24, 2026 note that put the standard edition priced at $79.99 and set launch for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. The Ultimate Edition is $99.99, a $20 gap, and Take-Two said it adds premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action threaded across Jason and Lucia’s story.
Rockstar’s own store comparison names the flavor of that extra layer: shops and services the standard disc-less copy does not open, plus exclusive cars and guns. The standard edition is still the full campaign and map. The upsell is gated places, gear, and story beats sold as a pack, which is exactly the sort of upgrade the ESRB listed when it defined the purchases tag.
ULTIMATE EDITION EXTRAS ROCKSTAR IS SELLING
- Story extras: Take-Two’s phrase is “action threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story,” not a second campaign.
- Shops and services: named locations such as the Electric Fang tattoo parlor, Stock 305 clothing store, and Sara’s Unisex Salon sit on the Ultimate list.
- Vehicles and guns: the pack includes a ’95 Grotti Cheetah, Hawk and Little Morgan revolvers, and engraved personal weapons for both leads.
- The separate upgrade: store pages already sell an Ultimate Edition Upgrade for people who buy standard first, which is an in-catalog purchase on the same product.
All purchases made before November 20, 2026 also include the Vintage Vice City Pack. Digital pre-orders add that GTA+ month, which is a subscription living on a different Rockstar game. The series has sold-in more than 470 million units, and the company is still attaching GTA V’s live service to the new launch SKU. That bundle alone can put a purchases warning on a box that contains a single-player story.
Hot Coffee Still Haunts the Sex Descriptors
Sexual content and this series do not meet as strangers. In the mid-2000s the ESRB moved Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to Adults Only after a hidden sex minigame, restored from the game files by modders, became public. Retailers pulled copies. The scandal trained every later board to spell out sex in the consumer advice, even when the playable system is a scripted scene rather than a toy.
That memory is why “Sex Scenes” on an Australian store page lands like a siren. It is also why the line is a poor leak. Boards write for parents who will never watch a trailer. They would rather over-name a fade-to-black than get caught again on hidden code. GTA 6’s U.S. rating stayed at M, one step below Adults Only, which console makers and big retailers still will not stock as a live product.
The M rating was treated as a punchline in the same hours the listings appeared, because nobody serious expected a Teen sticker on a Vice City crime story. The energy then slid, fast, into the Australian phrasing and into jokes about a returned Hot Coffee minigame. The purchases tag, the one line that actually fights a named Rockstar quote, did not travel as far.
November 12 Opens Code-in-Box Pre-Load
Take-Two’s calendar is now the hard part of the rating story. Digital pre-load begins November 12, 2026. The physical version, a download code in a box and no disc, goes on sale the same day so that box buyers can install before launch. Play starts November 19. On October 1, when the ratings landed, that launch sat 49 days out.
THE PATH TO THE NOVEMBER 19 LAUNCH
- June 24, 2026: Take-Two announces pre-orders, $79.99 and $99.99 pricing, and a single-player launch on November 19, still marked not yet rated.
- June 25, 2026: Pre-orders open at midnight local time, with the Vintage Vice City Pack tied to purchases made before November 20.
- Late August 2026: Nelson tells Cortez there are no monetizations in the game and no generative AI in its production.
- October 1, 2026: PlayStation and Xbox store pages show final Mature 17+, PEGI 18, and R18+ ratings, plus the In-Game Purchases notice.
- November 12, 2026: Pre-load and code-in-box copies become available.
- November 19, 2026: Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
Until the ESRB publishes the long summary, the store warnings are what parents have: an adult game with drugs, nudity, strong sexual content, and an extra-spending flag that already matches a $20 upgrade and a GTA+ trial. Rockstar can still keep real-money buys out of the story mode and leave that flag in place. The paperwork no longer lets anyone pretend the question is only about sex scenes.
