The Cough That Found Cancer Stops Manilow in Vegas
Bronchitis, the same illness that led doctors to Barry Manilow’s lung cancer, has now cut short his Westgate Las Vegas comeback after two songs.
Barry Manilow, 83, walked off the International Theater stage after two songs on October 9 and canceled the next night with bronchitis. His team called Thursday’s set a triumphant welcome-back. Friday lasted two songs, and his own calendar still sells the following weekend.
The cough is not a new character in this year. It is the same named illness that sent him for the scan that found a stage-one tumor on his left lung last winter, the same grind he tried to rest after a 29-show summer, and the thing that has now cut into a comeback Westgate still has on sale into 2027.
He Walked Off After Two Songs
Thursday, October 8, was the first Westgate night after a break he had set in late August. He told the room he was having a good time, that this was the first time back in a long time, that he had some medical problems, and that he was back. Two pairs of underwear landed on the stage, and he asked if they wanted him to send them to the laundry.
Friday did not get that far. After two songs he told the crowd to talk amongst themselves and left. The band played on for a stretch, then a voice over the speakers said the show was over. Ticketmaster mailed refund notices, and Saturday, October 10, was pulled in full.
HOW FRIDAY NIGHT ENDED
- The set: He stopped after two songs at the International Theater inside Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino.
- The line: He told the packed house to talk amongst themselves, then walked off.
- The close: The band kept playing until an announcement ended the night, and Ticketmaster followed with refunds.
- The next date: Saturday’s concert was canceled outright.
A representative for the musician and the resort put a name on it the following day, folding Friday’s abbreviated night and Saturday’s dark house into one explanation.
After a triumphant welcome-back concert on Thursday, Barry got hit with bronchitis and had to cancel his Friday and Saturday shows.

That Thursday concert was his first appearance after a six-week break that followed the August 22 show. One full night of jokes and a working voice does not make a three-night Vegas weekend a safe load, which Friday proved in under a half hour.
Bronchitis Found the Cancer Last Winter
On December 22, 2025, Manilow told fans a long bout of bronchitis had already been treated as the problem, until it was not. He had been through six weeks of it, then a five-week relapse, and had gone back on the Westgate stage feeling over it. His doctor ordered an MRI anyway.
The scan found a cancerous spot on his left lung that needed to come out. He called the timing pure luck and a great doctor, said physicians did not believe it had spread, and sketched the treatment in one crack: no chemo, no radiation, just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns. Representatives specified a stage-one tumor. Surgery followed in late December.
The easy part, as he later told it, was not the operation. He spent seven days in intensive care with pneumonia he said he never knew he had, and he has been clear that the pneumonia, not the tumor coming out, is what kept him in the hospital. “They threw that tumour in the garbage and I could have gone home,” he said. “It was the pneumonia that kept me in the hospital for a long time.” He later called the whole stretch a rough ride and said he was feeling great.
THE HEALTH FILE BEHIND FRIDAY NIGHT
- Age now: 83, performing a hits show built for a full house at the International Theater.
- The 2025 finding: A stage-one tumor on the left lung, caught on an MRI ordered after six weeks of bronchitis and a five-week relapse.
- The hospital stay: Surgery in late December, then seven days in ICU with pneumonia.
- The new diagnosis: Bronchitis again, named by his team as the reason Friday and Saturday went dark.
Nobody in the building has said the cancer is back. The heavier fact is simpler. The illness that made the doctor order that MRI is the one his camp just used to cancel two nights of the comeback that MRI delayed.
A Year of Dates That Would Not Stay Put
Westgate had sold 2026 as a full year of Manilow: Las Vegas, The Hits Come Home, at the same theater where he first appeared on January 12, 1988, and where the current residency began in 2018. Cancer, recovery, and a doctor’s veto kept sliding the start.
THE YEAR THE COMEBACK KEPT MOVING
- December 22, 2025: He announces the tumor, postpones January arena dates, and still points at Valentine’s weekend at Westgate as the party.
- February 12, 2026: The original Westgate return date does not happen; recovery takes the slot.
- May 2026: After a doctor visit he says he is making great progress and looks great, then adds he is not quite ready for Vegas, and the May shows come off.
- July 9, 2026: He finally gets back for three sold-out shows July 9 to 11 at the International Theater.
- August 20, 2026: He leaves after about 40 minutes; the next two nights are canceled for technical and vocal problems.
- August 25, 2026: He tells fans the summer tour was 29 shows in 68 days and that they were pushing a little too hard, then parks the residency until October 8.
- October 8, 2026: One full welcome-back show.
- October 9 to 10, 2026: Two songs, then a dark Saturday, both laid to bronchitis.
Cami Christensen, president and general manager of Westgate Las Vegas, called the July return moving and said the hotel was proud to welcome him back where he belongs. That sentence was true for three sold-out nights in July. It is harder to repeat after a two-song Friday in October.
Twenty-Nine Shows in 68 Days
The August pause was not sold as a new cancer scare. Manilow wrote it himself, in the voice he uses when he wants the room to laugh and then sit down.
We just finished a fantastic summer tour. 29 shows in 68 days. The shows were fantastic. The audiences were fantastic. And I sounded fantastic. But it seems that we were pushing a little too hard. Now we all need to sit down and shut up. So we’re going to take a break until we return to the Westgate Las Vegas on October 8th. When I’ll be singing like a bird.

Those 29 dates were the UK and U.S. summer, including the run that put him back on his feet after the ICU. Then he came home to Westgate, hit technical and vocal problems on August 20, canceled August 21 and 22, and pulled the next nine hotel shows: August 27 to 29, September 17 to 19, and September 24 to 26. The October 8 date was the landing he chose in public.
He landed. He got through Thursday. He did not get through Friday. A post-surgery lung at 83 can deliver one strong night and still lose the next one to the same chest infection that started this calendar. That is the pattern the August note already admitted, and bronchitis just wrote it in again.
Westgate’s First Lifetime Residency Contract
In 2024 the hotel gave him the first lifetime residency contract with Westgate, an open-ended deal at the old International Hotel showroom where Elvis Presley once set the house record. Manilow passed that mark in September 2023, when his 637th performance there moved him past Presley’s 636. David Siegel, Westgate’s founder and executive chairman, said he was honored to offer him the stage for a lifetime.
A lifetime deal is a marketing line until the body has to honor it three nights a week. Westgate is not a neutral landlord here. The International Theater is the product, Manilow is the name on the marquee, and the 2026 book was built around his voice before that voice had finished healing. Booking him through next spring is the bet. Friday is what the bet looks like when bronchitis collects.
People who still hold November and December tickets are the ones with flights and rooms already paid. Friday’s crowd got refund emails. The later weekends are the inventory the hotel has not been willing to take down, even after a two-song night, because taking them down would admit the calendar is larger than the lung it is written on.
THE WESTGATE CALENDAR STILL ON SALE
| Weekend | Shows | Status |
|---|---|---|
| October 8 to 10, 2026 | 3 | Thursday completed; Friday cut short; Saturday canceled |
| October 15 to 17, 2026 | 3 | Still listed, tickets on sale |
| November 5 to 7 and 12 to 14, 2026 | 6 | Still listed |
| December 3 to 5, 10 to 12, 17 to 19, 2026 | 9 | A Very Barry Christmas, sixth year, still listed |
| February 18 to 20 and 25 to 27, 2027 | 6 | Announced September 18, 2026 |
| March 25 to 27 and April 1 to 3, 2027 | 6 | Announced September 18, 2026 |
That is 18 remaining 2026 dates after this weekend, plus 12 already posted for early 2027. Platinum meet-and-greet packages for October 16 and 17 still show as sold out on his site, which is not how a canceled weekend is usually dressed.
October 15, 16 and 17 Are Still Listed
As of October 12, BarryManilow.com has dropped the October 8 to 10 cluster and now files October as three shows: October 15, 16 and 17. Ticketmaster had already stamped October 10 canceled while leaving the next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday open for sale. Westgate’s September notice still advertised the fall and holiday run, including 2027 dates through early April, and it framed October 8 as the kickoff of that stretch.
His team has not said whether bronchitis reaches those next three nights. The honest read of the public record is that Thursday proved he can still do the show, Friday proved he cannot always finish it, and the hotel has not yet chosen which of those nights it wants to believe.
WHAT WE KNOW
- Canceled nights: Friday, October 9, ended after two songs and was refunded; Saturday, October 10, was canceled.
- Named cause: Bronchitis, per the representative for Manilow and the resort.
- Official calendar: October 8 to 10 is gone from his upcoming-performances page; October 15 to 17 remain, with ticket links live.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Next weekend: No public call yet on October 15, 16, and 17.
- The chest infection: No update on whether the bronchitis has cleared, and no new scan has been described.
- The long book: November, December, and the 12 dates in 2027 have not been revised in public.
The question hanging over those later weekends is not whether fans still want the hits. They do. It is whether a lifetime residency, written for a man who has already given this theater more nights than Elvis, can keep selling three-show clusters after the cough that found a tumor has walked him off the same stage twice in two months.
October 15 is still a listed show at 7 p.m. Until someone takes that line down, the comeback is open, and the cough that opened this year has the next move.
