DJ Moore’s AC Joint Sprain Tests Buffalo’s Costly WR Bet
DJ Moore is day-to-day with an AC joint sprain after Buffalo’s 41-31 win, a 10-day test of the second-round bet the Bills made in March.
DJ Moore is day-to-day with an AC joint sprain after leaving Buffalo’s 41-31 win over Detroit on Sept. 17, and he is not a lock for the Chargers. He dove for a Josh Allen pass in the end zone, landed on his left shoulder, and never returned. The Bills have 10 days before they host Los Angeles on Sept. 27, the first pause in a receiver bet that cost a second-round pick.
He Landed on the Grass and Grabbed His Collarbone
The play came with 2:56 left in the first half, second-and-3 from the Detroit 6, with Buffalo already in front 21-7 at new Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. Allen threw low into the end zone. Moore dove, the ball hit him in the chest, and he came down on his left shoulder as Lions cornerback Rock Ya-Sin landed on him.
He stayed on the grass and reached toward the collarbone, then walked off under his own power with trainers and went straight in for X-rays. The Bills first listed him as questionable with a shoulder injury and a stinger, the nerve jolt that can numb an arm after a hit to the neck and shoulder. Before the second half they downgraded Moore to out.
THE NIGHT MOORE LEFT
- Sept. 17, 2:56 left in the second quarter: Moore dives in the end zone, lands on his left shoulder, and stays down.
- Sept. 17, after the play: Dawson Knox is flagged for holding, so the throw is not a recorded target. Allen hits Dalton Kincaid for a 16-yard touchdown on the next snap.
- Sept. 17, locker room: Moore gets X-rays and is listed as questionable with a shoulder and a stinger.
- Sept. 17, halftime: Buffalo rules him out. Head coach Joe Brady says after the game that he has no update.
- Sept. 18, morning: League sources describe an AC joint sprain that doctors do not treat as serious. He is day-to-day, with a chance to play the Chargers that is not a lock.
It was his first look of the night. He had already taken an end-around for a 1-yard loss and left with no catches. The dive looked worse than the walk-off. He did not cradle the arm the way players often do with a broken collarbone, and that is the detail trainers watch before the films come back.
A Second-Round Pick for a True No. 1
Buffalo did not add Moore in March to be a fourth option. The Bears sent him and a 2026 fifth-round pick (No. 165) to the Bills on March 11 for a 2026 second-round pick (No. 60), and he stepped in as the perimeter receiver Josh Allen had been missing. He is 29, wears No. 2, and arrived on the four-year, $110 million contract he signed with Chicago in July 2024, a deal that still averages $27.5 million a year with $81.525 million guaranteed.
Six days after the trade, Buffalo converted $22.185 million of 2026 salary into a bonus. That cut his cap charge this season to $6,752,000 while he still takes $24.5 million in cash, about $17.7 million of room on a deal that does not offer a cheap exit until 2028, when the dead money would be $13,311,000. The 2026 dead cap if they tried to move on now is $39,235,000. This was a multi-year hold, not a rental.
THE COST OF LANDING MOORE
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| Pick sent | 2026 second round (No. 60) |
| Pick received | 2026 fifth round (No. 165) |
| Contract | 4 years, $110 million ($27.5 million AAV) |
| 2026 cap hit | $6,752,000 |
| 2026 cash | $24.5 million |
| Earliest cheap out | 2028 ($13,311,000 dead cap) |
Chicago had just lived through his quietest year, 50 catches for 682 yards and six scores in 2025. Buffalo paid anyway because the tape still showed a runner after the catch who could work outside, and because Allen’s passing game had been sharing the ball among good complementary pieces rather than a true No. 1. In the opener at Houston, a 36-31 win, Moore caught 5 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown on 8 targets. That is the version they bought. Thursday was the first night that version left early.
Buffalo Still Put Up 41 Points
Allen threw three touchdowns and ran for two in the first regular-season game at the $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium, going 20 of 31 for 248 yards with no picks and adding 14 carries for 69 yards. It was his sixth career five-score game, and it followed a four-touchdown night in Week 1. James Cook ran 21 times for 135 yards and punched in a 1-yard score with 2:50 left. Buffalo ran for 203 yards as a team and is 2-0.
That was the start that we needed.
Josh Allen, quarterback, after the Highmark Stadium opener
Moore was not in that pile of highlights. Joshua Palmer, the extra perimeter piece, took a 43-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Dawson Knox scored from a yard out. Kincaid, who led the team with 7 catches for 95 yards, scored from 16 yards on the snap after Moore went down. Keon Coleman caught all 6 of his targets for 63 yards. Khalil Shakir had 3 catches for 38 yards on 6 targets.
The Bills scored 14 points in the second half without him, Allen’s 2-yard run and Cook’s closer, after taking a 27-10 lead into the locker room. That is not proof they wasted a second-round pick. It is proof the supporting cast can finish a Thursday when the new WR1 is in the training room. The deep look that hurt Moore was the same kind of shot they traded for. After he left, the ball went to tight ends, Cook, and shorter throws.
How Long These Shoulder Sprains Usually Last
An acromioclavicular joint sprain is the bump on top of the shoulder where the collarbone meets the shoulder blade. The classic football version is a direct landing on that point with another body on top of you, which is the picture from Thursday. Sports surgeon Dr. Catherine Logan has noted that about 96 percent of NFL AC separations are low-grade Type I and II injuries treated without surgery, and that NFL players miss about 10 days per injury, with quarterbacks out longest at 17 days on average.
NFL AC JOINT TIMELINES
- Share of low-grade sprains: About 96 percent of NFL AC separations are Type I or II and are treated without surgery.
- League average missed time: About 10 days per injury across positions.
- By grade: Type I injuries have a median of 3 days missed, Type II a median of 6, Type III a median of 16.
- Buffalo’s calendar: The Chargers game on Sept. 27 sits exactly 10 days after the dive.
Overnight, independent injury analyst Dr. Jesse Morse said he had “significant concerns that he just broke his collarbone, his left one,” and talked about surgery and a four-to-six-week gap if that were the case. Friday’s reporting landed on the milder side of that range: an AC joint sprain, not treated as serious, day-to-day. The team has not posted a Rockwood grade, so the 3-day, 6-day, and 16-day medians are the map, not a diagnosis.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The label: Shoulder plus stinger on Thursday, AC joint sprain on Friday.
- The severity: Doctors do not consider it serious. He is day-to-day.
- The next date: Chargers at Highmark, Sunday, Sept. 27, 1 p.m. ET.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The grade: Buffalo has not said Type I, II, or III.
- Week 3: A source said he has a chance to play and that it is not a lock.
- Week 4: Whether the staff would sit him against Los Angeles to have him for New England on Oct. 4 is a roster choice, not a medical finding.
A 2-0 team can take the extra rest. A 2-0 team that just paid pick No. 60 also has a reason not to make a habit of it.
The Snaps Go to Coleman, Palmer and Kincaid
If Moore cannot go on Sept. 27, the work does not vanish. It slides to people who already touched the ball on Thursday. The official depth chart lists Skyler Bell behind Moore on one outside spot, Joshua Palmer behind Keon Coleman on the other, and Khalil Shakir alone in the slot, with Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox stacked at tight end.
BUFFALO’S RECEIVER OPTIONS
- Keon Coleman: Caught 6 of 6 for 63 yards against Detroit and is the other starting outside receiver.
- Joshua Palmer: Already has the new stadium’s first passing touchdown, a 43-yarder in the first quarter.
- Khalil Shakir: The slot staple, 3 catches for 38 yards on 6 targets Thursday, still the safest short throw.
- Dalton Kincaid: 7 catches, 95 yards, and the score on the snap after Moore left, the clearest alternate red-zone target.
- Skyler Bell: Listed as Moore’s direct backup on the team chart if the starting outside job needs a fourth body.
That group is why Buffalo could keep calling plays after the X-rays. It is also why the trade still has a job to do. Coleman and Palmer are useful. They are not the 100-yard Week 1 tape Moore just posted. Shakir wins on efficiency. Kincaid wins in the middle of the field. The thing they bought in March was the outside threat that makes those other looks cleaner.
The Chargers Visit on Sept. 27
Thursday Night Football handed Buffalo a mini-bye it would not have had after a Sunday game, and especially not after a Monday night. Ten days is the same figure Logan cites as the NFL average miss on this injury, which is why the Chargers date is the first live test rather than a formality. Los Angeles comes to Highmark on Sunday, Sept. 27. The New England Patriots follow at home on Sunday, Oct. 4, the first AFC East game of Joe Brady’s season.
Sitting Moore against the Chargers to have him for the Patriots is available because the Bills are 2-0 and just scored 41 with him gone after halftime. Playing him if the pain allows is available because they did not spend pick No. 60 to watch Palmer and Coleman split his routes for a month. Brady had nothing for reporters on Sept. 17. The next injury report, not the dive, will decide it.
Buffalo already closed this game without starting defensive tackle Ed Oliver, who was out with a pregame hip injury, so the club has seen 2-0 with holes. The hole at receiver is the one they paid real draft capital to fill. Moore’s Week 1 line still sits on the board at 5 catches, 100 yards, and a score. The Week 2 line is a 1-yard loss, an incomplete in the end zone that came off the board, and an AC joint that now has 10 days to calm down before the Chargers walk into the new building.
