Dodgers Clinch the NL West After a Summer Spent Looking Mortal
The Dodgers clinched the NL West for a 13th time in 14 years, with a nine-game lead and a $430.4 million tax payroll.
The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched their 13th NL West title in 14 seasons on Thursday, beating the Cincinnati Reds 8-2 behind four hits from Kyle Tucker. Los Angeles is 93-60 with a nine-game lead, a tax payroll north of $430 million, and a lineup that spent July and August among the weakest in the sport.
Manager Dave Roberts stood in the visiting clubhouse at Great American Ball Park with a cigar and called the West a big deal, then reminded everyone it is not the end goal. A third straight World Series would be. No National League club has ever done that.
Kyle Tucker Finally Looks Like a $240 Million Outfielder
Tucker jumped the Dodgers in front in the first inning with a two-run homer, his 16th, after a walk to Freddie Freeman. He added an RBI double in the second, singled in the fourth, and doubled again later, finishing 4-for-5 with three RBIs and stopping a triple short of the cycle.
The afternoon was the version of Tucker that Los Angeles paid for in January on a four-year, $240 million deal. He had entered the game batting.226 with 15 homers, 66 RBIs, and a.700 OPS. Over his last eight games he is 12-for-29 (.414) with four homers.
Max Muncy ripped a two-run double in a three-run fourth, and rookie outfielder Josue De Paula, in his seventh big-league game, followed with an RBI single. Miguel Rojas homered in the ninth, his fourth. Brady Singer took the loss at 6-15 after seven runs, nine hits, and four walks in 3 1/3 innings.
Justin Wrobleski, making his 22nd start and his first since Sept. 6, faced nobody on the bases over three innings and struck out three. Landon Knack, recalled Thursday from Triple-A Oklahoma City, threw four scoreless innings for the win, his first in the majors since May 31 last year. Sal Stewart finally broke the shutout with his 32nd homer. The Reds have now lost six of seven to Los Angeles this season and fell to 71-82 in front of 24,169 on a 2:39 afternoon.
The club had already locked up no worse than a wild-card berth on Monday, and the party that night was quiet. Thursday they made a slip-and-slide out of the beer on the floor. Assistant athletic trainer Yosuke Nakajima dove in. Kiké Hernández dropped a bottle down someone’s shorts. Tarik Skubal built a fort out of empty Budweiser boxes and still got soaked while the room sang “Scooby Doo Pa Pa.”

It’s a big deal. I think a lot of people think it’s easy; it’s a rite of passage. It’s not easy to win a division when everyone is gunning for you, to keep everyone motivated to play over the course of 162. It’s something we’re all really proud of, but that’s not the end goal.

The NL West Never Got Closer Than Five Games
A June 1 loss to Arizona dropped the lead to five games, and that was the closest anyone got. Thursday’s win was the fourth-earliest Dodgers clinch after Sept. 10, 2019, Sept. 13, 2022, and Sept. 16, 2023, arriving in game 153. It is also their fifth straight West title and their 14th straight trip to October, tying the Atlanta run from 1991 to 2005.
NL WEST AFTER THURSDAY
| Team | W-L | Pct | GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dodgers | 93-60 | .608 | – |
| Padres | 84-69 | .549 | 9 |
| Diamondbacks | 80-73 | .523 | 13 |
| Giants | 64-89 | .418 | 29 |
| Rockies | 56-97 | .366 | 37 |
San Diego has won 10 of 11, including a 9-2 night in Colorado after the Dodgers had already popped bottles, and the Padres sit nine games back. Arizona is 13 back. The Giants, at 64-89, are 29 out. The West spent the year waiting for Los Angeles to break and never received the invitation.
Money is the easy punch line, and Muncy, cigar in hand, pushed back on it. “I don’t think what we’ve done as a team ever gets enough credit,” he said. “They just point to the payroll and say, ‘These guys pay a lot, so they win.’ That’s really not the case. We’ve paid the right guys.”
The right guys still spent two months looking stuck. Baseball’s oldest regular lineup played like it. Roberts conceded the age. Mookie Betts put it plainer: “We’re all 30. You feel it at some point.”
A $430 Million Tax Payroll and Two Quiet Stars
The winter was supposed to bury that feeling. Tucker and closer Edwin Díaz arrived with $309 million in combined guarantees. Díaz, on a three-year, $69 million deal, has been on the injured list with a neck problem since mid-August and will be eased into low-leverage work, not the ninth, after Roberts said Thursday he would be activated this weekend.
THE BOOKS IN LOS ANGELES
- Tax payroll: Spotrac lists a projected $430.4 million tax payroll, first in the majors, against a $244 million threshold.
- Tax bill: The estimated bill is $180.4 million for a 3-plus-time payor, with the top overage slice taxed at 110 percent.
- Tucker’s hit: His competitive-balance number is $57.2 million, 23 percent of the league tax line by himself.
- Ohtani’s line: He still leads the club with 30 homers and 80 RBIs, and he is on the 15-day injured list.
President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman has heard the three-peat talk since winter. “We’ve seen how difficult it is to repeat,” he said Thursday. “It’s even more difficult to do it three in a row. We know everyone is coming for us, and we get that.” He also said the regular-season bumps would not have changed this group much even if the summer had been smooth.
Roberts enjoys the daily grind because the alternative is the only grade the roster accepts. “There is certainly a higher expectation when, if you don’t win the World Series, you fail,” he said. “But that’s kind of part of what you signed up for with the Dodgers.”
Skubal Arrived as Extra and Leaves as Essential
On Aug. 2 the Dodgers traded outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith to Detroit for Skubal, the back-to-back American League Cy Young winner, and took on about $10 million of his $32 million arbitration award. It read as surplus. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, with 14 wins, is still the only starter who has made every turn. Blake Snell walked off Wednesday after one inning with left groin tightness. Tyler Glasnow has already had his own scare. Shohei Ohtani, in his first full two-way season since 2023, landed on the injured list Sept. 12, his first IL stint as a Dodger.
Skubal watched the club lose his first six games in a Dodgers uniform. “And I was like, ‘I don’t know what’s going on,’” he said. “But the whole group, the next day, rolled around and we were ready to play baseball. I think there was no panic from this group.”
Snell had been the hottest arm they had, 4-0 with a 1.04 ERA and 46 strikeouts in his six starts before Cincinnati, after May elbow surgery and an August return. He said he should be able to make one more start before the regular season closes. If Los Angeles holds a first-round bye, that next real date is the NLDS, not a tune-up in San Francisco.
Ohtani has been hitting off coaches. Roberts called him “normal-ish” on Thursday, which is not a medical clearance. Friedman and Roberts both said they expect him back before the regular season ends Sept. 27. He is eligible Sept. 23. How much of the two-way player shows up is the part no champagne solves.
No National League Club Has Ever Three-Peated
Last fall Los Angeles became the first club in 25 years to repeat as World Series champions, beating the Yankees 4-1 in 2024 and the Blue Jays 4-3 in a Game 7 in 2025. Only 14 clubs have repeated as champions. Two of them won a third in a row: the Yankees, three separate times, and the 1972-74 Athletics. The last three-peat was New York from 1998 to 2000.
THE CLUBS THAT WON THREE IN A ROW
- Yankees, 1936-39: Four straight titles to open the DiMaggio years.
- Yankees, 1949-53: Five straight, the longest championship run in the sport.
- Athletics, 1972-74: The only non-Yankees three-peat, ending with a 4-1 win over the Dodgers.
- Yankees, 1998-2000: The last three-peat, 26 years and counting.
The National League has never been on that list. That is the history hanging over the beer-soaked carpet. Roberts still told the room he thinks they are the most talented, the smartest, the toughest, and the hungriest team, then added the line that actually runs the next 10 days: enjoy it, and they have a ballgame tomorrow.
Milwaukee Holds the Bye the Dodgers Still Want
The Brewers are 95-58, two games up on Los Angeles for the NL’s best record and the No. 1 seed. Atlanta is 89-64, four games behind the Dodgers for the second bye. A top-two finish is the live race now that the West is done. Wild-card teams start on Sept. 29. The NLDS opens Oct. 3. Extra days are the whole point of the bye, because the injured list is still crowded.
THE LAST NINE GAMES
- Sept. 18-20: Host the Giants at Dodger Stadium, with Glasnow (4-1, 3.50 ERA) on Friday night.
- Sept. 22-24: Host the Padres, with Yamamoto, Snell if he is cleared, and Roki Sasaki on the penciled cards.
- Sept. 25-27: Finish at San Francisco, the last three of nine games left against San Francisco and San Diego.
FanGraphs still has Sasaki, who has been on the IL with a finger issue, in that Padres finale. Andy Pages (hand) and catcher Dalton Rushing (elbow) are also out. Edgardo Henriquez, whose 2.85 ERA had made him a bullpen piece, is on the 15-day list with a back strain. Freeman has been managing a knee. The October problem is not the Padres’ nine-game deficit. It is whether Ohtani, Snell, Díaz, and the rest of that board are actual baseball players by the first week of October.
Skubal did not mind the sneak attack in Cincinnati. “I think everything is just soaked in beer and champagne, which is the way it’s supposed to be,” he said. Roberts had already closed the meeting. The West is a box they have checked 13 times in 14 years. The next party is the only one this roster will count.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Many Division Titles Have the Dodgers Won?
Thursday’s clinch was the franchise’s 24th division title, counting every West crown since 1969 and the flags before the split. Los Angeles now sits alone atop the NL West’s all-time list; San Francisco is next with nine titles in the division era.
Which Team Stopped the Dodgers’ NL West Run?
The 2021 San Francisco Giants, who won 107 games and took the division by one game over Los Angeles. The Dodgers still reached the NLCS that October as a wild card, then started the current run of five straight West titles in 2022.
Has a National League Team Ever Won Three Straight World Series?
No. The Cubs (1907-08), New York Giants (1921-22), and Cincinnati Reds (1975-76) each won two in a row and stopped there. Every three-peat in the sport belongs to the Yankees or the Athletics.
When Do the 2026 MLB Playoffs Start?
The wild-card round is scheduled to begin Sept. 29. The National League Division Series is scheduled for Oct. 3, so a first-round bye would give Los Angeles four extra days to get Ohtani, Snell, and Díaz back on a postseason roster.
