Warzone’s Last-Gen Cutoff Arrives With Modern Warfare 4
Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One dies when Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 starts, after Activision already stripped the last-gen store in June.
Call of Duty: Warzone will stop working on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One when Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 begins, shortly after the October 23, 2026 launch. The last-gen shop is already gone. Anyone who still has the client in a console library can keep playing through the end of Black Ops 7 Season 06, and that is the last window.
Activision announced the cutoff on May 28, on the same day it unveiled Modern Warfare 4 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The free battle royale stays on those machines. It does not stay on the two boxes that carried it from launch in 2020.
The Store Came Down in June
The lights-out date is not a surprise dropped in September. Last-gen Warzone has been in a managed sunset since early summer, and the money side died first.
THE LAST-GEN WARZONE CUTOFF
- June 4, 2026: Warzone is pulled from PlayStation 4 and Xbox One digital stores. New downloads stop. Packs bought with local currency, including COD Points, BlackCell, and Call of Duty League Operator Packs, leave last-gen menus. The paid Battle Pass can no longer be bought with COD Points. The free track stays up.
- June 25, 2026: The in-game store is removed on both consoles. COD Points can be spent on that shop through this date and not after.
- October 23, 2026: Modern Warfare 4 launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. It does not launch on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
- Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 / end of Black Ops 7 Season 06: Warzone is no longer playable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
That last pair is the same window described two ways. Activision’s support FAQ says the last-gen client remains available through the end of Season 06 if the game already sits in a platform library. The May 28 blog says the client stops at Season 1. Season 1 is scheduled shortly after launch, which is when Warzone is meant to pick up Modern Warfare 4 content.
Players who never added Warzone to a PS4 or Xbox One library before June 4 cannot get it back on those machines. Owners can still reinstall from the library until the season ends. After that, the last-gen client is done.
Why Last-Gen Warzone Cannot Follow Modern Warfare 4
Warzone on current hardware is not being closed. It is being tied to the new paid game. Call of Duty Staff wrote that Season 1 starts a shared year of content, and that Warzone will take on Modern Warfare 4 maps, weapons, and seasonal progression as a connected experience between both titles.
As part of this transition, Call of Duty: Warzone on PlayStation 4 and XBOX One will no longer be playable starting with Season 1.
Call of Duty Staff, Modern Warfare 4 announcement, May 28, 2026
Modern Warfare 4 is built natively for current consoles and PC. Infinity Ward says that focus is what lets the campaign, multiplayer, and the returning DMZ extraction mode run at the scale the studio wants. The game launches with 12 Core maps, plus Kill Block, a training-facility mode whose modular sections can form more than 500 layouts. None of that stack is coming to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
Because Warzone now shares a season with the annual game, a last-gen Warzone that cannot ingest that season has nowhere to go. The free client on old hardware is not a separate product with its own roadmap. It is a live service that follows the paid shooter, and the paid shooter has left those boxes behind.
Current-gen players have been saying for years that those old machines were holding the battle royale in place. The connected season is how Activision finally drew the line, after it had already stopped taking last-gen cash in June.
COD Points Stay Inside the Console Family
Skins are not wiped. Currency is pickier. Activision’s FAQ is clear that progression and content purchased with COD Points follow a linked Activision account onto a supported platform, while unspent points and most real-money packs stay inside the same console family.
WHAT MOVES WHEN LAST-GEN WARZONE ENDS
| Item | On PS4 or Xbox One after Season 1 | If you move to a supported platform |
|---|---|---|
| Warzone client | Unplayable | Playable on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC |
| In-game store | Removed since June 25, 2026 | Live on current hardware |
| Content bought with COD Points | No last-gen client to use it on | Available on any supported platform with the same Activision account |
| Unspent COD Points | Cannot be spent on last-gen Warzone | Redeemable on a current-gen console in the same family, same account |
| Most local-currency packs | Tied to the platform account | Usable on current-gen in the same family |
| Other Call of Duty games | Still playable on last-gen | Unchanged |
| Free Battle Pass track | Open through the rest of Season 06 | Season 1 then runs on current hardware with Modern Warfare 4 |
A PlayStation 4 player who buys a PlayStation 5 can spend leftover points there. An Xbox One player who buys a Series X or Series S can do the same. Cross the families, and the points stay behind. Items already bought with those points still travel on the Activision account.
BlackCell was pulled from the last-gen Warzone shop even earlier. The FAQ says that starting in Season 04, BlackCell could no longer be bought through that store on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The paid Battle Pass itself left last-gen Warzone on June 4. The free tiers, including new weapons, remained.
All other Call of Duty titles that originally shipped on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One stay up. The change is Warzone only.
Caldera Went Dark on September 21, 2023
This is the second time Activision has turned off a Warzone client. The original 2020 battle royale, later branded Warzone Caldera after the jungle map, lost its servers on September 21, 2023 so teams could focus on the 2022 replacement that dropped the “2.0” label and became Warzone again.
That shutdown was total. Caldera needed an online connection, and once the servers went away the inventories went with them. Purchased items that also existed in Modern Warfare (2019), Black Ops Cold War, or Vanguard stayed in those games on the same account. COD Points stayed on the platform where they were bought. Activision said there were no plans to bring Caldera back, and told players to delete it for disk space. The Warzone Caldera shut down on September 21, 2023, and a launch of that client now returns a connection error.
The 2026 cutoff is narrower. Current-gen Warzone keeps running. Last-gen players who can buy or borrow a PlayStation 5, an Xbox Series console, or a PC keep their progression. Players who cannot do that lose the live game and keep older Call of Duty discs that still boot.
Switch 2 Gets a Native Modern Warfare 4 Build
While PlayStation 4 and Xbox One lose the free game, Nintendo Switch 2 gets the paid one. Infinity Ward is building Modern Warfare 4 natively for Switch 2 with Digital Legends, the first Modern Warfare release on a Nintendo system in more than a decade. Pre-order timing for that version was slated for later in the summer of 2026. Campaign early access for digital pre-orders on the other platforms begins October 16, a week before launch.
That split is the generation change in one picture. A new Nintendo machine is inside the connected Warzone year. Two Sony and Microsoft boxes that have run Warzone since 2020 are not. Infinity Ward’s own platform note is blunt: the game will not be available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
Warzone on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X|S keeps going after Season 1, now feeding on Modern Warfare 4’s season. Last-gen players who want that client have to move hardware, and they have to move inside the family if they still hold a COD Points balance they intend to spend.
A Failed Update Can End Play Before Season 1
The remaining last-gen risk is not the calendar. It is the install. Because Warzone left the old digital stores on June 4, a console that drops the title during a patch cannot grab it again from the shop. The library reinstall path is the only door, and it only works if the platform still treats the game as owned.
That trap already caught people during Black Ops 7’s later seasons. A last-gen update that deletes the client, or a storage wipe, can end Warzone on that box weeks before Season 1. There is no new download to save it.
WHAT LAST-GEN WARZONE CAN STILL DO
- Play the live client: Matches still run through the end of Black Ops 7 Season 06 if the game is already in the library.
- Grind the free pass: Free Battle Pass tiers, including new weapons, stay unlockable. The paid pass is gone on that client.
- Use what you already bought: Owned skins and items remain on the account; they are usable on current hardware with the same Activision ID.
- Boot older Call of Duty games: Every other last-gen Call of Duty title Activision originally released on these consoles remains available to play.
- Not re-download from the store: The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One listings have been gone since June 4, 2026.
- Not open a shop: The in-game store has been gone since June 25, 2026.
Season 06, branded The Haunting, Season 06 launches on September 17 at 9 AM PT. The official Battle Pass page listed 47 days remaining on that pass, which runs the track into early November. The pass costs 1,100 COD Points, with a 2,400 CP bundle and BlackCell at $29.99 on platforms that still sell them. Last-gen Warzone cannot take those paid tracks. It can still grant the free weapons on the pass, including the VMP submachine gun and the TR51 Para rifle.
Modern Warfare 4 still launches on Friday, October 23. Season 1 follows shortly after. When that season starts, the last-gen Warzone client stops. The older Call of Duty games on those same shelves keep working. The free battle royale on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One does not.
