Insomniac Dims Wolverine’s Scent Trails but Leaves Them On

Insomniac cut scent-trail opacity in Wolverine hotfix v1.001.005 but will not switch the mutant tracking off, even as Senses color is already a setting.

Insomniac Games reduced the opacity of Marvel’s Wolverine scent trails in hotfix v1.001.005 on September 19. The download also tamps down Audio Sense cues and clears crashes for a small share of players. A full off switch is still only being explored, and the trail still aims Logan at the next beat.

Eight days earlier the studio’s community lead had called that ribbon canon mutant tracking, not a waypoint you could kill in the menu.

Hotfix v1.001.005 Leaves the Pointer Intact

Marvel’s Wolverine launched on PlayStation 5 on September 15 as an Insomniac Games exclusive published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The new hotfix went live four days later. Insomniac’s support note says it fixes some common crashes seen by a small percentage of players since launch, then turns to the feature that ate the pre-release week.

The studio wrote that the patch adjusts Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators, including less intense scent trail visuals. That is a look change. It is not an off switch. Side-by-side captures after the download show the bright ribbon flattened into a pool of color on the ground in front of Logan. You can still read exactly where to walk. It just shouts less.

Audio Sense sits in the same sentence in the notes, so the hearing cues got the same intensity cut. The team says it continues to look at ways to improve Senses, including toggleable options for a future update. No date sits on that line, and this patch does not ship one.

THE v1.001.005 HOTFIX

Piece What changed What did not
Scent Trails Lower opacity, less intense look Still on during tracking; no toggle
Audio Sense indicators Presentation adjusted, opacity cut Still on; no toggle
Crashes Fixes for a small percentage of players Scope limited to “common” cases
Senses toggle Named as under exploration Not in this download; no date

Players who wanted the gas gone still have it. Players who wanted a button to sniff on command still do not have that either. Insomniac changed the paint on a system it still treats as part of Logan, not as HUD.

Canon Tracking, Then a Fainter Ribbon

Reviews landed on September 10, five days before launch, and the argument started there. Gene Park tagged the blue path behind characters Logan follows as “fart gas,” and the name stuck because the effect looks like a cloud more than a hunt. People then went into the menus looking for a kill switch, found Navigation Assist and mission waypoints, turned those off, and watched the blue path stay.

James Stevenson, Insomniac’s director of community and marketing, answered on September 11. He did not apologize for the look. He filed the trail under mutant power.

The scent trail isn’t always on. It represents Logan’s canon mutant super senses and elite tracking ability. It only is there when he’s tracking a specific scent / sound (a person, whisky, or another clue scent)

He added that collectibles still ask you to get close enough to catch the sound or scent, and that you will miss stuff if you don’t explore if you skip the radius adaptations. That is a coherent design pitch. It is also the pitch the studio had to walk back, visually, eight days later, after the nickname outran the lore note.

THE SCENT TRAIL WEEK

  1. September 10, 2026: The review embargo lifts. Park’s “fart gas” line becomes the shorthand for the blue tracking path.
  2. September 11, 2026: Stevenson says the trail is not always on and frames it as canon tracking for people, whisky, clues, and collectibles.
  3. September 15, 2026: Marvel’s Wolverine launches on PS5. The trail cannot be switched off in the shipped menus.
  4. September 19, 2026: Hotfix v1.001.005 cuts opacity on Scent Trails and Audio Sense and says a toggle is being explored.

Other games have used colored scent paths for years, often on wide maps where getting lost is the point. Wolverine is a linear brawler with cutscenes and combat rooms. On that shape, a glowing path reads as a tour guide even when the script says smell. The joke landed because the picture and the pitch did not match.

Why the Trail Stayed Locked On

The confusion was baked into the menu. Marvel’s Wolverine ships a long accessibility list, including Chase Assist, which slows targets in chase scenes, and Navigation Assist, which draws a direction trail toward the nearest enemy or mission objective. Mission Waypoint Display can sit on On, R3 Hint, or Off. None of those controls the scent ribbon. Turn the extra green guide off and the blue path remains when Logan is tracking.

That is why people called it always on. Stevenson was right that it is not a constant overlay for the whole campaign. He was also talking past the actual request, which was the right to disable it in the moments when it does appear. A linear level that already funnels you forward does not need a second, unkillable arrow that happens to be flavored as musk.

Insomniac’s own notes still will not call Scent Trails a waypoint. They sit under Senses, with Audio Sense, as if smell and hearing were the same class of toy as lock-on and waypoint icons. The hotfix keeps that filing. Intensity down. Category unchanged.

You Can Recolor Senses, Not Silence Them

The same official options sheet already lets you restyle the effect you cannot kill. Visual assists include a Senses Color Customization setting, plus separate colors for Senses threat, parry threat, and dodge threat. You can paint the super-smell a new hue. You cannot mute it.

That gap is sharper next to tools that do shut whole systems down. Skip Puzzle lets you bypass puzzles. Traversal Assist can strip climbing inputs. Global Game Speed and Combat Game Speed can drop the whole fight to 70%, 50%, or 30%. First boot even opens a First Time User Experience menu so you can set this before the story starts. Scent is the thing they would not put on that list.

GUIDANCE YOU CAN SWITCH OFF

Control What it does Can you kill it?
Mission Waypoint Display Objective icons, On / R3 Hint / Off Yes
Navigation Assist Direction trail to an enemy or objective Yes, with color and turn-speed extras
Chase Assist Slows chase targets Yes
Skip Puzzle Bypasses puzzles Yes
Senses color Recolors the Senses effect Color only; no off switch
Scent Trails Smell and sound tracking ribbon No, even after v1.001.005

A studio that lets you skip puzzles and hide waypoints is not afraid of options. It drew a line around smell because it wanted the power on camera. The internet named the camera pass fart gas, and the line still held. Only the opacity moved.

1.9 Million Copies in Three Days

The argument did not freeze the register. Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Alinea Analytics, estimated Marvel’s Wolverine moved 1.9 million copies and about $130 million in its first three days, with 1 million of those copies sitting in pre-launch digital pre-orders. He put physical at 22.9% of that revenue, and the early playerbase at 53% United States, 7% United Kingdom, 5% France, and 4% Canada. Sony has not posted an official sales figure.

Critics were cooler than the sales clip. Metacritic’s PlayStation 5 page lists a 77 Metascore from 128 critic reviews, 89 of them positive, 39 mixed, and zero negative. User score sits at 6.9 from 4,674 ratings, with 64% positive. That split is the week in miniature: plenty of people finished the brawler, and plenty of people still hated being led by the nose.

OPENING WEEK NUMBERS

  • Copies: Alinea Analytics estimates 1.9 million in three days, including 1 million pre-launch digital pre-orders.
  • Revenue: About $130 million in that window, 22.9% of it physical, per Elliott.
  • Critics: 77 on Metacritic from 128 reviews, 70% positive, 30% mixed, none negative.
  • Users: 6.9 from 4,674 ratings, mixed or average on Metacritic’s own band.

A fainter ribbon does not rewrite those numbers. It does tell you which complaint Insomniac chose to answer first. Crashes for a small group, then the meme that was following the game into every screenshot.

The Arkham-Style Button That Never Shipped

The clean fix was never a transparency slider. If the trail is Logan’s tracking, it wants a trigger. Hold a shoulder button, or tap R3, and the world lights up the way detective mode does in the Arkham games. Release, and the floor is a floor again. The mutant fantasy stays. The tour-guide ribbon goes away until you ask for it.

That is the version people kept describing after the hotfix landed. It matches Stevenson’s own rule that the trail should appear only when Logan is on a scent. A player-triggered sense would have made that rule visible. An always-drawn path during those missions makes the rule feel like copy. The patch notes still do not mention a button. They mention intensity, then a possible toggle later.

THREE FIXES THAT WERE AVAILABLE

  • Recolor: Already in the shipped Senses color options, and it does not answer the complaint.
  • Hold to sniff: A press or hold would keep tracking as a power you use, not a stripe you walk.
  • Full off switch: The notes say this is being explored. It is not in v1.001.005.

Some players still want the ribbon. They lose the plot in the linear spaces and treat the color as a kindness. That group is easy to serve with a default-on sense and a toggle. The group that wanted Wolverine to hunt, not to follow a stain, is the one the hotfix leaves half-answered.

No Date on a Full Off Switch

Insomniac can skip puzzles, hide waypoints, recolor Senses, and slow the entire fight clock. It still will not let you shut the smell off. v1.001.005 makes the gas quieter and leaves the pointer in the level. The future toggle is a sentence, not a setting.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • Live now: Lower opacity on Scent Trails and Audio Sense, plus crash fixes for a small percentage of players, as of the September 19 hotfix.
  • Still mandatory: When Logan is tracking a person, whisky, clue, or collectible, the path cannot be disabled in the current menus.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • The toggle: Insomniac is exploring toggleable Senses options. It has not said which Senses, what the default will be, or when a patch will carry them.
  • A button: No note has promised an R3 or hold-to-sniff mode, which would keep the power without the floor ribbon.

The nickname won a dimmer. The tracking system is still on, still framed as Logan, and still waiting on a date that the September 19 notes do not give.
